{"id":3214,"date":"2023-10-01T13:08:52","date_gmt":"2023-10-01T03:08:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jcreid.net\/blog\/?p=3214"},"modified":"2023-10-01T13:08:52","modified_gmt":"2023-10-01T03:08:52","slug":"hugo-awards-extravaganza-2023-introduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jcreid.net\/blog\/2023\/10\/01\/hugo-awards-extravaganza-2023-introduction\/","title":{"rendered":"Hugo Awards Extravaganza 2023 \u2013 Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been a while since I\u2019ve done this, <span id='easy-footnote-1-3214' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.jcreid.net\/blog\/2023\/10\/01\/hugo-awards-extravaganza-2023-introduction\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-3214' title='A long while &amp;#8211; pre-covid (2019) '><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> so I hope I\u2019m not too rusty.\u00a0 As is my want, I\u2019ll stick to the Fiction categories, prioritising Novel, Novella, Novelette and Short Story (the last two generally being my favourite categories), then if I have time hit Series, Graphic Novel, New Writer, and Young Adult (the last two technically not being Hugos).\u00a0 I\u2019ll also dip my toes into the presentation categories if I\u2019ve already covered off most of the entrants.<\/p>\n<p>Despite starting fairly late (only a month and a week to get through the list), I have a fairly strong leg up in that I\u2019ve read at least one book from every series nominee (sorry Founders Trilogy) which also gives me a leg up on novel,<span id='easy-footnote-2-3214' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.jcreid.net\/blog\/2023\/10\/01\/hugo-awards-extravaganza-2023-introduction\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-3214' title=' Nona the ninth'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and all but one of the Long form dramatic presentations.<span id='easy-footnote-3-3214' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.jcreid.net\/blog\/2023\/10\/01\/hugo-awards-extravaganza-2023-introduction\/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-3214' title=' Avatar '><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0 Looking at the list of nominees, I\u2019m particularly looking forward to best Novel (as both Kaiju Preservation Society and Daughter of Doctor Moreau were already on my radar).<\/p>\n<p><em>Note, the observant amongst you might notice this is going up on the last day of Hugo voting and not 5 weeks in advance- due to a confluence of circumstances &#8211; work, family, and wordpress, this is going up a bit late, and my voting coverage will all be finalised after the voting closes.\u00a0 I was going to revise and extend the above, but I think it&#8217;s important to stake my marker before voting closes, and in 2023, I voted in Novel, Novella, Novelette, Short Story, and Series. <span id='easy-footnote-4-3214' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.jcreid.net\/blog\/2023\/10\/01\/hugo-awards-extravaganza-2023-introduction\/#easy-footnote-bottom-4-3214' title=' Finally a not on the image.\u00a0 This year&amp;#8217;s Worldcon is being held in Chengdu &amp;#8211; this came up in my search of public domain images for Chengdu, and I&amp;#8217;ll take any excuse to post a red panda.
