{"id":661,"date":"2018-12-30T15:13:47","date_gmt":"2018-12-30T05:13:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jcreid.net\/blog\/?p=661"},"modified":"2018-12-30T15:13:47","modified_gmt":"2018-12-30T05:13:47","slug":"review-hullmetal-girls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jcreid.net\/blog\/2018\/12\/30\/review-hullmetal-girls\/","title":{"rendered":"Review &#8211; Hullmetal Girls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes I just want the literary equivalent of junk food.\u00a0 Hullmetal Girls has a cover of an earnest woman in space armor, the dedication is to the kung fu panda 2 soundtrack, and the blurb is about a girl in a lost fleet who agrees to become a robocop for the government, only to find that all is not well (and it&#8217;s obvious both what is not going well and where it is going to go).\u00a0 I knew exactly what I was going to get from the book, and by and large, this is an extremely competent version of that.<span id='easy-footnote-1-661' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.jcreid.net\/blog\/2018\/12\/30\/review-hullmetal-girls\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-661' title=' Competent, note adjective. '><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> \u00a0 I will however say that the actual scene of cyborgization, <span id='easy-footnote-2-661' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.jcreid.net\/blog\/2018\/12\/30\/review-hullmetal-girls\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-661' title=' Not a real world, but strictly speaking, it is not roboticization. '><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> is genuinely horrific and disturbing, and generated so much good will going forward that I was willing to overlook the otherwise rote plotting and flawed second protagonist arc.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Exactly what you expect it to be.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes I just want the literary equivalent of junk food.
