Hugo Awards Extravaganza 2023 – Introduction

It’s been a while since I’ve done this, 1 so I hope I’m not too rusty.  As is my want, I’ll stick to the Fiction categories, prioritising Novel, Novella, Novelette and Short Story (the last two generally being my favourite categories), then if I have time hit Series, Graphic Novel, New Writer, and Young Adult (the last two technically not being Hugos).  I’ll also dip my toes into the presentation categories if I’ve already covered off most of the entrants.

Despite starting fairly late (only a month and a week to get through the list), I have a fairly strong leg up in that I’ve read at least one book from every series nominee (sorry Founders Trilogy) which also gives me a leg up on novel,2 and all but one of the Long form dramatic presentations.3  Looking at the list of nominees, I’m particularly looking forward to best Novel (as both Kaiju Preservation Society and Daughter of Doctor Moreau were already on my radar).

Note, the observant amongst you might notice this is going up on the last day of Hugo voting and not 5 weeks in advance- due to a confluence of circumstances – work, family, and wordpress, this is going up a bit late, and my voting coverage will all be finalised after the voting closes.  I was going to revise and extend the above, but I think it’s important to stake my marker before voting closes, and in 2023, I voted in Novel, Novella, Novelette, Short Story, and Series. 4

  4. Finally a not on the image.  This year’s Worldcon is being held in Chengdu – this came up in my search of public domain images for Chengdu, and I’ll take any excuse to post a red panda.
